Andrew Fersch and Laura Minich Zitske talk with host Tom Bell about Piping Plovers and efforts to protect their habitat in Maine. Andrew is the author of the children’s book, “The Piping Plover,” about the endangered seabirds that live at Higgins Beach in Scarborough. The book is illustrated by Bruce Hutchison of Cape Elizabeth. Laura is a wildlife ecologist and Coastal Birds Project Director at Maine Audubon.

Friends of Merrymeeting Bay- Episode 1: Arrivals

Featuring: Mauricio Handler, Natural History & Underwater Cinematographer, Aquaterra Films. “Episode 1: Arrivals” is a wildlife documentary, to be part of a larger series called "American Waters." In tonight’s presentation, Handler, producer and cinematographer for the series, discusses his ongoing efforts to document Maine’s coastal and fresh water species arriving here in the spring. The one hour special "Arrivals” tells the intertwining stories of various aquatic species and the characters that benefit from their annual migration to Maine's coastal waters, estuaries, rivers and ponds.

In honor of Frederick Law Olmsted's 200th birthday, the Portland Parks Conservancy has partnered with friends groups and local organizations around Portland to celebrate our public parks. This summer is full of free events all over the city that are open for everyone! Come for food trucks and live music by the water to celebrate how wonderful our parks in Portland truly are. Learn about the future of our parks and which green spaces may soon be public parks in your city. The picnic will be held at Amethyst Park between SailMaine and Ocean Gateway. September 14th at 7:00pm - First ever reading of "This Land was Saved for You and Me" by Jeff Ryan. The book discussed Olmsted's influence on Yosemite National Park and how he came to be the man he is known as now. Reading will be at Mechanic's Hall in Portland.

Maine Challenge – One Off Bruce Gagnon Interview – Jan 5 2021

he Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space is the leading group internationally working to keep space for peace. Bruce Gagnon, its coordinator since it was established in 1992, details his impetus in challenging the turning of space into a war zone. Gagnon speaks of the aerospace industry seeking to get the money to pay for the U.S. moving into space militarily by taking it from “entitlement programs—Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and what’s left of the social safety net,” plus the links between space weaponization and the use of nuclear power in space.
