About Us: Portland Media Center (Community TV Studio/Station on Cable Channels 2 & 5) is a
cornerstone of local creativity and communication in Portland, Maine. We are dedicated to
amplifying voices and fostering creativity within our community. The PMC offers expert training
in diverse types of media production and provides education and networking opportunities and
resources to all. We are currently seeking an ambitious and strong operational Executive
Director to lead the organization and execute on all our programs and initiatives, including our
strategic CivicIQ Initiative.
Key Responsibilities -
Strategic Planning
● Provide operational direction and leadership to align with our 5 yr strategic
vision and achieve organizational mission and goals.
● Partner with the board and engaging staff in developing a shared vision for the
future, ambitious but achievable goals, and actionable strategies
● Ensure mission alignment, fidelity to the strategic plan, and measurable
progress through the development and execution of annual operational plans
and budgets
● Provide timely and substantive reports to the board on progress
toward/accomplishment of defined goals and objectives and any variances
● Engage the board as appropriate to address emerging challenges and
opportunities, working with standing and ad hoc committees as needed.
Financial Management and Fund Development
● Oversee preparation, presentation, and approval of the annual budget and other
financial documents
● Develop and execute a robust and diversified fundraising strategy including
initiatives to engage individuals, businesses, private foundations, and public
entities.
● Exceptional grant writing skills: craft compelling grant proposals to secure
essential funding to support our mission. Your ability to convey our story and
community impact in a way that resonates with potential funders is crucial.
● Implement innovative donor engagement and retention strategies to expand
and deepen our donor base and secure sustainable funding.
● Cultivate long-term relationships with key donors, civic and business leaders,
and allies
● Maintain healthy cash flow and adequate reserves to mitigate risk and ensure
sustainability.
Human Resources and Operational Management
● Maintain a healthy and respectful culturally diverse working environment while
continuing to foster a culture of excellence, continuous improvement,
accountability and service to the community
● Directly lead and manage staff and attract, develop, and retain strong talent
across the organization.
● Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
● Provide for appropriate systems, physical spaces, and technology to ensure
accessibility and to promote efficiency and effectiveness.
Public Relations/Marketing
Heighten the organization’s visibility, deepen community involvement, and maintain awareness of community needs to insure relevancy and efficacy of our mission, programs and offerings
Foster/strengthen relationships with other Community Television stations in Maine, Maine Community Media Association, and the national organization, Alliance for Community media.
Foster/strengthen relationships with community stakeholders, partners, and donors. This includes City of Portland, Public Schools, Regional government offices, Greater Portland municipalities, USM, SMCC, Metro, the general public, multiple non-profit members and the creative communityOversee the development and execution of a strategic marketing and
communications plan.
Media & Program Development and Implementation
● Ensure the thoughtful design, development, and delivery of mission-aligned
programmatic initiatives.
● Develop and implement educational opportunities from beginner to advanced
level, to attract and onboard new members, creators and all supporting skilled
positions required to produce varied short and long-form media content
● Increase the services we provide to our community by identifying new
opportunities and enhancing existing programs to build greater capacity and
capability
● Ensuring that appropriate policies are in place to maintain best practices in all
service areas and adherence to the highest standards
● Timely and accurate reporting on program activities and outcomes
● Develop membership programs and initiatives to significantly grow new
members and retain existing ones, enhancing community involvement and
support.
● Create event opportunities to engage with the greater community, expanding
awareness of our services.
Position Requirements
Leading Portland Media Center requires a broad set of attributes and skills, and at
least five years’ experience in a senior leadership position preferably in the nonprofit
sector. Passion for the PMC’s mission is essential. It is expected that the successful
candidate will be an authentic people person who brings to the Portland Media Center:
● High emotional intelligence
● Management experience in media, or related fields. Mixed nonprofit and
for-profit experience is a plus
● Deep experience, (and desire and energy) leading an organization strategically
through change, clarifying priorities, setting goals, determining metrics,
assessing results, and steering course corrections as needed
● Demonstrated effectiveness in managing up and down to promote meaningful
engagement and accountability.
● Financial acumen and specific understanding of nonprofit financial reporting,
budget development and management, and compliance
● Compelling presentation, public speaking, networking, and written
communication skills; and adaptability to diverse audiences
● Prior involvement in multi-faceted, sophisticated and fruitful
fundraising/development efforts
● Current knowledge or ability and willingness to learn technical aspects of a full
media production environment which includes production, direction, filming,
sound, lighting, camera, editing, etc. at high production quality levels.
● Ability to manage time and energy efficiently, juggle competing demands, and
prioritize. Process oriented, data driven, focused

As a small organization, we are ambitious and expect to greatly increase revenue and
service offerings over the next 5 years. You will be instrumental in creating and
executing plans to achieve this financial and organizational growth.
This position involves occasional evening and weekend obligations.
