Brethren Voices

Brethren Voices is produced by the Portland Peace Church of the Brethren. These 30-minute (28:30) community television programs cover a wide variety of topics of interest to the viewing public. These shows include:

– 95 year old Mary Blocher Smeltzer speaking about her work with Japanese American placed at the Manzanar internment camp during World War II

– Haiti home building after 2008 storms and hurricanes

– The 7,000 ‘Sea Going Cowboys’ who cared for and accompanied livestock shipments to war-torn countries following World War II. Out of this work Heifer International was created which has assisted millions of families throughout the world to attain greater self-sufficiency.

– ‘Grace Goes To Prison’ about restorative justice.

Brethren Voices – Laura Sewell – Missionary To India

To go out and proclaim the Gospel to all the lands was something that the church of the Brethren took to heart. Church of the Brethren missionaries were sent to many countries including china and India.

Brethren Voices – Brethren Volunteer Service – Orientation Unit 291

Since 1948, volunteers have served through Brethren Volunteer Service, BVS, for a year or more, giving their time and skills to help a world in need. THese volunteers are going to work with projects in the United States, Northern Ireland, El Salvador, and Guatemala.

Sea Going Cowboys - Peggy Reiff Miller|Photographs and stories from research on the Seagoing Coyboys. Between 1945 and 1947 over 7,000 Seagoing Cowboys were on board 73 ships caring for livestock shipments to war-torn countries following world War II.
