The institution now known as the University of Southern Maine (USM) has been many things to many people since first opening its doors to the public in late December of 1878. Today, the University of Southern Maine, northern New England's outstanding public, regional, comprehensive university, is dedicated to providing its 9,700 students with a high-quality, accessible, affordable education. Through its 115 undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs, USM faculty members educate future leaders in the liberal arts and sciences, engineering and technology, health and social services, education, business, law, and public service. As a public, regional, comprehensive university, our mission places us at the heart of this region's future. USM students will be the artists, business people, engineers, health care workers, public servants, teachers and others whose talents will fuel our economy—and shape tomorrow's world.
